The recent story that voters may be asked to increase the local sales tax for Whatcom Transportation Authority because of falling revenue and deficits included the startling information that taxes already provide roughly 90 percent of the WTA's revenue.
Fares - what riders pay - provides only about 10 percent.
While I value countywide public transportation, running WTA as a near charity seems astounding. One can ride from Sumas to Bellingham, for instance, for only a buck.
I believe voters will require a lot of explanation, education, efficiencies and reform before approving additional funding.
