Land grab indeed. When it comes to the Whatcom County Council candidates subsidized by gravel miners and developers, beware. The real grab is for your wallet. Higher taxes inevitably result from the need to provide public services for the sprawling growth and development their industries supply.

I believe gravel miners and developers, like teenagers, want taxpayers to share their constant outrage about the importance of their rights, but they're not worried about yours. Don't be fooled. They want the benefit of unconstrained growth but are happy to share the costs with taxpayers.

Governing is a lot like parenting. We are often in need of remembering our responsibilities as well as our rights, and of learning to forgo some instant gratification in order to secure long-term benefits and to avoid unintended consequences. Happily, Carl Weimer, Dan McShane, Laurie Caskey-Schreiber, and Ken Mann have good parenting skills. Please mark your ballot for them and send it in today.
