"Follow the money" is a good approach when deciding whom to vote for. Per the Public Disclosure Commission, it turns out Mary-Beth Teigrob got a $10,000 check from someone in the gravel industry. That's a lot of money for a County Council race, but I noticed some others, i.e. Kathy Kershner, Michelle Luke and Knutzen have also taken a fair amount from them.
Why is the gravel industry so interested in these elections?
Old rules once allowed strip mining of farmland in Whatcom County. They remove the top soil and turn a farm into an open pit mine. Once strip mined, the land will never be the same. I believe the gravel industry would like to go back to the days of lax mining rules, of strip mining some of the world's best farmland, in every part of the county. We need to put farmland and clean water first, not millions in industry profits. If I remember correctly, Teigrob said she did not represent special interests or seek endorsements. The donor also happens to be chair of the Whatcom Republicans.
Vote for Ken Mann, Dan McShane, Laurie Caskey-Schreiber and Carl Weimer who put the interests of all of us first.
