The new Sunset Square Safeway store will be opening later than anticipated.
The scheduled opening of the grocery store is now slated for late January, said Safeway spokeswoman Sara Osborne. It was originally scheduled to open in November.
Safeway is remodeling the former Cost Cutter space for a 67,000-square-foot store. The company is also building a six-island fueling station.
The gas station will be at the edge of the property where an auto repair shop previously sat. That building was demolished to make way for the gas pumps.
This will be the second Safeway in Whatcom County. The Lynden store opened in 2002. Safeway previously had stores in Bellingham but closed the last one in 1993.
