Tomatoes: 'Oregon Spring' and 'Early Girl'

Mary Eliker, 60, has been growing tomatoes for 20 years and knows just what she wants when she visits the nursery.

"We all have our favorites," says the Hamilton Place Senior Living resident.

Eliker says most of the residents in her retirement community in Cordata have patio gardens featuring their favorite fruits, herbs and vegetables. It's a garden-enthused community and they enjoy visits from the WSU County Extension.

Strawberry: 'Seascape'

Terry Maczuga, nursery manager at Cloud Mountain Farm in Everson, says strawberries are a great addition to the home garden. She recommends varieties that are "everbearing" or produce berries throughout the summer. Also, opt for a variety that is virus-resistant. These plants will be more reliable fruit producers in later years.
