Lost Lake: Moderate hike reveals a hidden treasure

Round trip: Up to 13 miles.

Difficulty: Moderate. There is a long climb on a logging road in the north section and there are sections near the lake with deep, shoe-sucking mud.

Highlights: Shady second-growth growth forest, fern-strewn cliffs and a lake with a healthy population of frogs and herons.

Getting there: From the north: Begin on the Interurban Trail at Arroyo Park. Take a left at the "Lost Lake" sign after you climb out of the gully. After winding through the woods, turn left onto California Street, an old logging road. When you come to a "Y" junction with the Hemlock Trail, take a right turn up the hill. Continue south until you get to the lake, picking your way over logs in the muddiest area. A narrow trail leads around the lake.

From the east: Begin at the south parking lot in Larrabee State Park. If you're on foot, go north on the Interurban Trail, take a right on the Fragrance Lake Trail and climb up until you get to a junction with a trail leading to the right. Take that trail to Fragrance Lake Road. Turn right and keep walking, watching for a trailhead on the left. Take the trail, keeping to the right-hand path when it breaks in two. The trail will lead over a ridge to a loop going around the lake.
