Anderson Butte: Great day hike for families

Located in the Noisy-Diobsud Wilderness to the south of Baker Lake, Anderson Butte is a great day hike for families seeking a rewarding view. Travel for about 1 mile along the Watson Lakes Trail — a less strenuous family adventure but with less of a view. The final ascent is a bit steep, but it is short and well worth the effort.

Current conditions: Trail is clear. Call Forest Service office in Sedro-Woolley at (360) 856-5700 ext. 515.

Permits: Northwest Forest Pass required; $5 for the day or $30 for an annual pass.

Getting there: Drive south on Interstate 5. Take exit 232 and turn left onto Cook Road. When it intersects with Highway 20, turn left. Follow Highway 20 east for 16 miles; turn left onto Baker Lake Road. Continue for 14 miles to Baker Dam Road, on the left. You will pass Kulshan Campground and cross the Upper Baker Dam. Follow road to Watson Lakes trailhead. Drive time from Bellingham: 2 hours.

Parking: Park at end of road.
