Shadow of the Sentinels: Easy hike near Baker Lake

Shadow of the Sentinels is a barrier-free trail alongside Baker Lake Road. Half paved, half boardwalk, the path meanders through a 500-year-old forest of towering Douglas firs and cedars. Stop at some one of several interpretive signs along the way to learn more about old growth forests.

Amenities: Trail is wheelchair accessible. Interpretive signs along path. Two vault toilets at trailhead.

Current conditions: Trail is clear. Call Forest Service office in Sedro-Woolley at (360) 856-5700 ext. 515.

Permits: Northwest Forest Pass required; $5 for the day or $30 for an annual pass.

Getting there: Drive south on Interstate 5. Take exit 232 and turn left onto Cook Road. When it intersects with Highway 20, turn left. Follow Highway 20 east for 16 miles; turn left onto Baker Lake Road. Follow for 15 miles to trailhead, located on right side of road. Drive time from Bellingham: 1 hour, 30 minutes.

Parking: Park at trailhead.
