Ferndale shortstop and pitcher Casey Locker was the only Whatcom County baseball player selected to the first team of the 2009 Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All-State team, which was released Tuesday, June 16.

Locker, a senior, led the Northwest Conference with his .484 batting average. He also had 30 RBI, 30 runs scored, three home runs and eight stolen bases for the Golden Eagles.

On the mound, Locker was 6-3 with a 2.61 ERA and 43 strikeouts.

He also was selected the Most Valuable Player of the Northwest Conference by the league's coaches and was a first-team pick as a pitcher. The senior will attend Washington State University next year to play football.

Though Locker was the only Whatcom County first teamer, Sehome placed three players on the Class 2A second team - sophomores Tenny Pitsch and John Albert and senior Anthony Pitsch - and Ferndale placed Spencer Hannah on the 3A second team.

Anthony Pitsch played mostly shortstop and was a relief pitcher for the Mariners, going 3-0 with a 4.00 ERA. He batted .391 with six doubles and 21 runs scored and was a first team All-NWC selection.

Albert was also a first-team All-NWC selection as a pitcher, after he went 6-1 with a 1.56 ERA and led the conference with 64 strikeouts. He added a .344 batting average, three doubles and a triple at the plate and also played in the outfield for Sehome.

First baseman Tenny Pitsch finished second to Locker with a .460 batting average and led Sehome with 27 runs scored. He had three home runs, 22 RBI, 10 doubles and a .605 on-base percentage and helped Sehome advance to the state tournament for the fourth straight year. He was also a first-team All-NWC selection.

Hannah, a senior, hit .415 with 19 RBI, 28 runs scored, three home runs and a team-high nine stolen bases. He also was selected first team All-NWC as an outfielder.

Burlington-Edison's Dylan Boe was a first-team pick on the 2A team, while Tiger's teammate Ian Capron and Anacortes' Braiden Darling were second-team selections. Sedro-Woolley infielder bobby Twedt was a first-time pick in 3A.

Tahoma's Chris Marangon was selected the Class 4A Player of the Year, while Newport's Brian Fisher was the Coach of the Year. In Class 3A, Eastside Catholic's Matt Boyd and Liberty's Eric Peterson shared Player of the Year honors, while Highline's Dave Larson was Coach of the Year. Cedarcrest swept the top Class 2A honors, with Travis Cook selected Player of the Year and Scott Goldsberry earning Coach of the Year honors, while Naches Valley did the same in Class A-B with Thomas Wilcox the top player and Bill Walker the top coach.
