Prep Notebook: Crim, Ramstead win Todd Curran Scholarship

Nooksack Valley's Erika Ramstead and Ferndale's Jordan Crim are this year's winners of the Todd Curran Memorial Scholarship awarded in honor of the late Sehome High School scholar-athlete.

Ramstead, a three-sport standout for the Pioneers, maintains a 3.8 grade-point average and will be playing basketball at Western Washington University next season. Crim holds a 3.9 grade-point average and will be playing football for Central Washington University in the fall.

The recipients receive $5,000 distributed over a five-year period.

The scholarship was initiated by former Sehome student/athlete Jeff Reinert, and later named after Curran in 1996 after he passed away while fighting a brain tumor.

Students considered for the award must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, be involved with sports, volunteer their time in the community, and can't be receiving a full-ride scholarship already.

ANNUAL EAST-WEST ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GAME SET

The annual East vs. West All-Star High School Football Game is set for Saturday, June 27, at Everett Memorial Stadium in Everett at 1 p.m.

Competing in the event this year from Whatcom County are Ferndale's Spencer Hannah and Orin Paul. The game features some of the best senior high school football players in the state.

Hannah was named to the All-Northwest Conference first-team at both wide receiver and cornerback and an honorable mention all-state pick at wide receiver.

Paul was an All-NWC pick at linebacker and offensive line and was an all-state honorable mention pick at linebacker.

FORMER FERNDALE STANDOUT KOENEN TO HOST FOOTBALL CAMP

Former Ferndale standout and current punter for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL, Michael Koenen, will be holding a free football and cheer camp at Ferndale High School on June 27.

The inaugural Michael Koenen Pro Sportsfest is open to children grades 1-8 and will emphasize physical fitness and academic success. Enrollment in the camps is limited and applications will be accepted on a first-come basis.

An NFL vs. Faculty/Alumni basketball game is also scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Koenen is also hosting a two-day kicking, punting, and long snapping program on June 25 and 26 for middle school and high school students.

LYNDEN'S MCKEE SIGNS WITH SKAGIT VALLEY COLLEGE

Lynden boys' basketball standout Trenton McKee recently signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Skagit Valley College next season.

McKee averaged nearly 17 points a game this season for the Lions and was named to the All-Northwest Conference first team.

SQUALICUM'S CURL TO RUN AT U. OF SAN FRANCISCO

Squalicum running standout Sophie Curl has signed a national letter of intent to run at the University of San Francisco next season.

Curl was named to the All-Northwest Conference first-team in cross country and helped the Storm to a Class 2A state title in the girls' 4x400 relay at Star Track XXVII last week.

"I'm so excited about it," Curl said at the state track meet. "The trail systems there are just amazing and I can't wait to run there."

BLAINE'S PRICE SIGNS WITH SOUTHWESTERN OREGON

Standout Blaine wrestler Darrell Price Jr. has signed a national letter of intent to wrestle at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore., next season.

Price won a Class 2A state championship at 215 pounds in February and also competed in the 20th annual National High School Coaches Association Senior Nationals Wrestling Championship in Virginia in April.

LYNDEN'S GROOTHUIS TO PLAY COLLEGE LACROSSE

Lynden football standout Gunnar Groothuis has committed to play lacrosse at Limestone College in South Carolina next season.

Groothuis, who plays goalie for the North County lacrosse team, said in an e-mail that he was noticed by the Saints while playing for a Seattle club team in a tournament in Delaware.

Groothuis was a standout offensive lineman for the Lions and is looking forward to playing NCAA Division II lacrosse.

STORM TO HOST GIRLS' BASKETBALL CAMP

The Squalicum girls' basketball team is holding a summer youth camp for players entering grades 3-9.

The camp runs from June 29 to July 2 and features individual and team skill development. It will be coached by Storm coach Scott Wilson along with several returning varsity and junior varsity players.

The cost is $65 and includes a T-shirt and basketball. For more information contact Wilson at 676-6471 ext. 5053 or sign up through the Bellingham Parks and Recreation department.

SEHOME HANDS OUT BASEBALL AWARDS

The Sehome baseball team has named its award winners for the 2009 season. The Mariners' Mr. Hustle award went to Caleb Savage. Most Improved went to Luke Lablond. Dane Siegfried and John Albert were named the Most Valuable Players. Siegfried also won the Stephen Dember Memorial Award.

Tenny Pitsch won the Busher Lewis Inspirational award and the Joe Martin Best Hitter award. Albert also took the Les Galley Award for best pitcher. Patrick Sodt won the Academic Award.

SPOTS STILL OPEN FOR GRAND SLAM BASEBALL CAMPS

Spots are still available for the 27th annual Grand Slam Baseball Camps. The session for players aged 7-10 is June 28-July 2. The 13-16 year old session is July 6-9, and the 11-12 year old session is July 13-16.
