TACOMA - Halfway through the Class 2A boys' 110 meter hurdles final at Star Track XXVII, Blaine senior Shayne Moore started having a conversation with himself.
"I could feel myself losing focus going over the sixth hurdle," Moore said. "I thought I was going to let it slip away so I told myself to snap out of it and get going."
A quick burst over the last hurdle and through the finish line propelled Moore to a gold medal on Friday, May 29, by about two steps. Moore finished with a time of 14.61 seconds nipping Black Hills' Cody Peterson who finished at 14.68.
"One of my biggest strengths is going over that last hurdle," Moore said. "I'm pretty tall so I can use that height to find the finish line. I'm not taller than Cody, but I trust my kick at the end."
Moore blew a quick kiss to the crowd after the race and didn't lose the smile on his face for a good 10 minutes. His hands shook with adrenaline while talking about the race.
"This is just amazing," Moore said.
As for the internal discussion that he had with himself, Moore said it's something that doesn't happen very often. And he was certainly glad he took his own advice.
"When he started to catch me I just kept telling myself, 'You're not done yet, baby, you're not done yet,'" Moore said.
