PREP GIRLS' TRACK: Reid first St. Paul's athlete to place at state

Years from now, once St. Paul's Academy has a bit more established athletic program, Clara Reid will be able to brag about how she was the first athlete in the history of the school to place at state.

Reid finished fifth in the 3,200 meters at the Class 1B Track and Field State Championships on Friday, May 29, in Cheney.

"I hope success breeds success," St. Paul's coach Jason Sytsma said in a phone interview. "With Clara's success, it will promote interest in some of our middle schoolers and others that will going to the high school program in the coming years. ... This is a huge accomplishment for Clara and the school to be represented at the state meet in our first year having a track program. We're excited for her and the program."

Reid came out quick, keeping pace with the lead group of three runners through the first half of the race, but she ended up falling back a little to finish with a time of 13 minutes, 25.42 seconds. Trout Lake/Glenwood's Emily Pason won the race in 12:14.39.

"I think she (Reid) tried to go out aggressive and stay with the leaders today," Sytsma said. "We was just trying to place as well as she could, and she ended up burning a little too much energy at the beginning."
