For the first time since the tournament was revamped in 2000, the Blaine wrestling team won the Battle of the Border in Blaine.

The Borderites finished with 191.5 team points to beat second place Riverside (170) in the 27-team tournament. Ferndale finished fifth with 127.5 and Bellingham was tied for ninth with 111.5.

Blaine’s Jeremy Holbas won the 215 title and improved to 10-0 on the season, while teammate Jacob Humphrey won the 119 champi-onship, for his second Battle for the Border title.

“The kids battled really hard and won a lot of close matches,” Blaine coach Craig Foster said. “It was kind of a state-level feel with a lot of champions and medalists in the brackets. To be able to compete at that level is going to help kids down the road.”

Bellingham’s Reid Chivers won the 189 championship and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, as voted by coaches.
