The Lummi football team finished its regular season with a 62-38 victory at Lopez on Thursday, Nov. 5.
At 7-3 overall, the Blackhawks qualify for the Class 1B district playoffs and will play their first-round game next Friday or Saturday. Blackhawks coach Jim Sandusky said the team will play Taholah, a team they beat handily earlier in the season.
"We played well against Taholah in our third game of the season," Sandusky said in a phone interview. "We beat them by about 40 points and it was a good game for us. But they're going to be a different team and I'm sure they improved quite a bit."
After getting out to an early 30-6 over Lopez by the end of the first quarter, the Blackhawks scored again in second quarter to lead 38-14 at halftime. The big lead provided Lummi with the flexibility to use some of its backups in the second half.
"We actually threw the ball well when we needed to and opened up the game in the first quarter," Sandusky said. "It was a good chance for our older second-string guys and our younger guys to get into the second half. It was a great opportunity to finish our regular season with everyone on the field."
Quarterback Ty Jameson led the Blackhawks with four passing touchdowns, completing nine of 16 passes for 149 yards and throwing one interception. Lummi's leading rusher was Andy Williams who had two carries for 71 yards with one touchdown.
"Overall, it was good to see us play well in inclement weather, we might see that a couple times in the first couple rounds of the playoffs," Sandusky said.
