LUMMI - As Neah Bay's league championship football team began chanting "No. 1, No. 1, No. 1," the Red Devils could just as easily have been chanting for their slick junior quarterback.

With the Pacific Coast Conference eight-man title on the line, Neah Bay's No. 1 - Drexler Doherty - passed for four touchdowns and ran for two scores in Lummi's 50-30 loss before a large crowd on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Lummi (6-3, 4-1 league) will have to settle for the league's No. 2 postseason seed. Neah Bay (9-0, 5-0), the state's third-ranked eight-man squad, will be No. 1, having also beaten the Blackhawks in a non-league game 28-22.

"The potential is there," Lummi coach Jim Sandusky said, when asked if his team can go deep into the postseason. "As I was just telling the team, all is not lost. We are a good team."

Neah Bay's ability to go deep on the Blackhawks doomed Lummi to defeat, as Sandusky readily acknowledged.

"We did a good job in the second half adjusting to their running game, but their big-play passes beat us," he said. "We had some undisciplined plays and missed assignments, and (Neah Bay) just made some great throws and catches."

Neah Bay coach Tony McCaulley saw it the same way.

"Lummi played really well against our run," said the second-year head coach of how the Blackhawks held the Red Devils to 66 yards rushing in the second half after allowing 131 in the first two quarters "We hadn't shown that (passing attack) as much yet this season, but our quarterback really is an excellent athlete. This was our best (overall) game."

With 7 minutes and 5 seconds remaining to play, Lummi pulled within 36-30 after safety David James tackled Doherty at his own 8 when he was forced to scramble when a punt attempt went awry.

Lummi eighth-grader Deion Hoskins, a 215-pound prospect who had not yet appeared in the game's statistics, bulled three yards and then five to score, and quarterback Ty Jameson passed to James for a 2-point conversion.

That was the only rushing touchdown for Lummi, which netted only 83 yards on 23 runs and suffered five turnovers. The Blackhawks' first three touchdowns came on passes - of 47 yards from Kyle Finkbonner to junior Eric Robinson, 35 yards from Jameson to Robinson and 19 yards from Jameson to James.

Doherty, though, didn't seem the least bit bothered by Lummi's last score. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior immediately unloaded passes of 28 yards to 6-4 Robert Moss and Andy Pascua. Doherty then smashed his way five yards, followed by a 1-yard sneak for the game-clinching score with 4:42 remaining.

Doherty's third 2-point conversion pass to Moss, who towered over Lummi defenders, put the Red Devils up 44-30, and Moss soon caught his second touchdown pass for the game's final score.

With Lummi up 14-12 in the second quarter, Doherty put the Red Devils ahead to stay with touchdown passes of 37 and 39 yards to junior Evan Bowechop. Joe Tolliver's 23-yard scoring run in the third quarter dropped Lummi behind 36-22.

Doherty finished 8 for 16 for 218 yards, with six completions of at least 25 yards, and the Red Devils amassed 415 total yards. Jameson completed 16 of 25 passes, including several shovel tosses, for 179 yards and two scores.

Lummi will finish the regular season at Orcas Island with a 2 p.m. kickoff Thursday, Nov. 5. Sandusky said the Blackhawks are likely to open the postseason Nov. 14 against Taholah.
