The Mount Baker girls' soccer team fell short of its season goal to make the 2A Northwest District Girls' Soccer Tournament, with a 3-2 play-in game loss to Granite Falls on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The loser-out game sent Granite Falls to the district tournament where they will battle Sehome in the first round at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Whatcom Community College.

The Mountaineers finished their season with a 9-8 overall record and a 7-7 Northwest Conference record.

"Granite Falls is a good team, they outplayed us," Mount Baker coach Kelly Grayum said in a phone interview. "We weren't quite ready for the intensity of the first 20 minutes - we didn't play our best until after that."

Granite Falls' Katie Cashman scored just six minutes into the match and Katyann Powers gave Granite Falls an early 2-0 lead, finding the back of the net in the 26th minute. Cashman scored what ended up being the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute.

Lauren Frey came up big for Mount Baker despite the loss, scoring the Mountaineers' two goals in the 32nd and 75th minutes.

"Lauren, for the third game in a row, stepped up and did her best, but we were just outmatched," Grayum said.

Grayum said this season's team, which has eight seniors graduating, was the best he has coached in his five years at Mount Baker because of the team dynamic.

"They didn't play their best game today but they battled and worked hard together," Grayum said. "Every game had a different hero this season. It was cool that it was always a team effort."
