THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

The Nooksack Valley girls' soccer team nearly pulled out its second win of the season, but let in a second half goal to fall 2-1 to Friday Harbor in a non-conference game on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Pioneers' Courtney Edwards tied the game at 1-1 to start the second half after finding the back of the net off a corner kick cross from teammate Michelle Huttema.

But Nooksack Valley, which fell to 0-11 in conference and 1-11 overall, couldn't hold on despite 10 saves from goalkeeper Alicia deBont, who recently moved up from junior varsity to fill in for two Pioneer goalies - normal starter Abi Mondragon and Brianna Wholley - who have been sidelined by injuries.

"It was not only her best game of the season, but it may have been the best goalkeeping we've had all season," Nooksack coach David Ostlund said in a phone interview. "She was phenomenal today."
