The Paperboys kick off Bellingham's summer concerts in park

Deming Logging Show, Lummi Stommish also highlight weekend events

The Vancouver, B.C.-based Paperboys play Celtic, bluegrass, folk and rock at Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department's first free, family-friendly concert of the season at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Boulevard Park.

Parks staff will lead children's games, but kids must be supervised by their parents. Call 778-7000 for details.

Catch local and regional loggers in action in such competitive activities as cable splicing, speed climbing, log rolling and hot saw bucking at the Deming Logging Show, Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14, at the Deming Logging Showgrounds, 3295 Cedarville Road, near Nugents Corner.

Gates open at 7:30 a.m. each day, with shows beginning at 1 p.m. Tour the museum, dine on the salmon-chicken-roast beef barbecue and see some of the equipment on display.

THE SPIRIT OF STOMMISH

The Lummi Stommish Water Festival, Friday through Sunday, June 12-14, on the Stommish grounds at Gooseberry Point, pays tribute to the Lummi military veterans.

Highlights of the festival are the war canoe races; the Stommish parade; a salmon barbecue; a "Moonlight Concert," featuring Harlen James and the Red River Band; a carnival and performances by the Swan Clan Dancers and the West Shore Canoe Family.

SUSTAINABLE SALMON

The seventh annual Salmon at the Bay art show and barbecue, sponsored by the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, begins at noon Saturday, June 13, at Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro, 1107 Railroad Ave.

The all-ages event, with the theme "Yes We Can! Our Hope for Salmon," honors our community's history of salmon fishing and canning, as well as NSEA's efforts and vision for the future of salmon in Whatcom County.

Events include a salmon barbecue lunch, a dinner, a live auction of salmon-related art by local artists, and a 21-and-older show by Lucky Brown & the Funk Revolution from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Costs vary; for more information, call 715-0283 or go to n-sea.org.

COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE

The Bellingham Chamber Chorale collaborates with members of Bellingham Repertory Dance, Northwest Ballet Theatre and Western Washington University faculty and students in Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore," a dramatic work featuring vocal and instrumental music and a sung narrative at 8 p.m. Saturday at WWU's Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

Performers include Northwest Ballet's Seth Weatherby and Miye Bishop. Tim Fitzpatrick directs the chorale. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 students and seniors; and is free for ages 18 and younger.
