Lynden's inaugural Heritage Celebration -- created by combining the former Holland Days and Farmers Day festivals -- begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 6, with tours of the new city hall until 2 p.m.
Other highlights include:
the Farmers Day parade at 10:30 a.m.,
an open-air market; an "Art in the Park" display by members of Whatcom Art Guild at Centennial Park and another exhibit at the Lynden Library;
a classic car show from noon to 9 p.m. at the Northwest Washington Fair and Events Center;
kids' activities, including a carnival at Northwest Washington Fairgrounds;
an International Dance Competition from 12:30 to 4 p.m.;
a concert by the Dutch-Canadian Choir of Calgary, Alberta, at 1 p.m.;
a Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds (the demo derby is also at 7:30 p.m. Friday).

Most events are free. The classic car show is $5 for those 13 and older. It's also open 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 5. Tickets to the demolition derby are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-12. They also include admission to the car show.

TALE AS OLD AS TIME
The Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth presents "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5-6, at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.
The play is directed by David Post, with musical direction by Steve Barnes and choreography by Mary Simler Evans, and features a 90-member all-youth cast, ages 8 to 14.

CABERS, THE HIGHLAND FLING AND "THAT BAGPIPE SONG"
More than 1,000 competitors vie for awards in dance, bagpiping, Highland dancing, harping, drumming and athletics at the Bellingham Highland Games at Ferndale's Hovander Homestead Park - starting with a Scottish Idol Talent Show at 7 p.m. Friday, and continuing from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5-7.
Highlights include performances by Tempest and Maggie's Fury.

BIG BIRD FLY-IN
The Bell Air Club Radio Control Flyers Club, one of the largest remote-control model aircraft clubs in the area, presents its 20th annual Big Bird Fly-In, a free display of model monoplanes and biplanes, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, at the club's flying field, on Red River Road, just west of Haxton Way south of Ferndale. Refreshments will be available on site.

GLIMPSES INTO SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE
Davy Rothbart, a reporter for National Public Radio's "This American Life;" and his folk-musician brother, Peter, collect notes, photos, drawings, letters and other discarded stuff found and sent to them by readers, and publish them in Found Magazine, an annual publication.
They share entries and songs inspired from their recently published "Found" book, "Requiem for a Paper Bag: Celebrities & Civilians Tell Stories of the Best Lost, Tossed and Found Items from Around the World," at 8 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the Upfront Theater, 1208 Bay St. Tickets are $15.
