Hundreds of children across the county took out their crayons, markers and paint for the annual Be Kind to Animals Week poster contest put on by the Whatcom Humane Society.

This year's theme was "How can kids be kind to animals."

Entries were divided into two age categories - kindergarten through third grade in one group, and fourth- and fifth-graders in the other. The judges had a difficult time selecting the winners from the variety of artwork received.

Winners in the 4th-5th grade category:

1. Jazmin Williams, 11, Geneva Elementary

2. Morgan Jones, 10, Wade King Elementary

3. Madeline Smith, 11, of Sudden Valley

Winners in the K-3 category:

1. Maddie Martin, 8, of Sudden Valley

2. Carter Jones, 6, Wade King Elementary

3. Ross Campbell, Geneva Elementary

Finalists will have their posters displayed at the Whatcom Humane Society for a year, showcased on the society's TV show "PetWatch" that airs on BTV-10, and featured online at whatcomhumane.org.
