The skies may be gray and monochromatic, but the world is bursting into flaming colors as the leaves change hue.

There are plenty of places where the trees are showing off their coats before shedding them for winter, so head to the mountains or just around town to catch the fall colors while you can.

INTERURBAN TRAIL

Start at Fairhaven Park and wander the trail through the changing woods over to Larrabee State Park.

WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

Western's campus and the surrounding neighborhoods are full of old trees just waiting to drop their leaves. Take a stroll up Garden, Forest or High street to get the full on feeling of fall.

NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK

The Cascade Pass Trail, Washington Pass Overlook and Easy Pass Trail can be accessed from Highway 20 (North Cascades Highway). The overlook provides a scenic drive and short trail loop, while Easy Pass Trail allows hikers a chance to see the bright yellow of turning larches. For directions and trail conditions, go online at www.nps.gov/noca, or call (360) 854-7245.

MOUNT BAKER-SNOQUALMIE NATIONAL FOREST

If you're heading up Mount Baker Highway, try a hike on Goat Mountain or Chain Lakes trail. Enjoy the huckleberries, heathers and mountain and lake views. For more information about trails and conditions, go online at www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs, or call 599-2714.

CHUCKANUT MOUNTAIN TRAIL SYSTEM

Explore the vast woods of Chuckanut Mountain, either with a trip up Chuckanut Drive or hikes through any number of the mountain's trails. For maps and trail details, go online at www.co.whatcom.wa.us/parks/trails/chuckanut.jsp.
