Musician Ani DiFranco, who recently received the Woody Guthrie Award for being a voice of positive social change, performs at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at Western Washington University's Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

Her latest recording is the New Orleans-infused "Red Letter Year."

POWDER FILMS

The Mt. Baker Film Festival, now in its 10th year, showcases short works and portions of feature-length films by independent filmmakers of the ski and snowboard industry at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St. Entries were selected by a panel of Mt. Baker ski area pass-holders and employees.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and vendors, a DJ and a carnival game are part of the pre-screening activities. Admission is $9 and is free for 2009-2010 ski-passholders before 7 p.m. (bring your pass).

An after-party for ages 21 and older takes place at the Wild Buffalo, and features funk-jazz band Salem.

COMICON 2009

Bellingham ComiCon 2009 welcomes artists Bob Smith (Archie, Plastic Man, Batman); Michel Gagné (Zed, "Ratatouille," "The Iron Giant"); Randy Emberlin (GI Joe, Dr. Strange, Alien Legion); Brandon Jerwa (Battlestar Galactica) and others to the regional comic-book convention, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Hampton Inn's Fox Hall, 3985 Bennett Drive, near Bellingham International Airport.

FALL OPEN HOUSE AT WWU

Western Washington University hosts a variety of community events this weekend, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 23-25.

Among the highlights: departmental open houses and faculty presentations in numerous academic areas; a piano recital by Parisian native Lauren Boukobza; planetarium shows; woman's rugby and soccer matches; and a theatrical presentation directed by Rich Brown, "The Mistakes Madeline Made" (suggested for mature audiences due to language and subject matter).

COMFORT WOMAN

Me'Shell Ndegeocello, who was born Michelle Johnson and adopted the Swahili name for "free like bird" early in her career, performs harmonic funk and hip-hop - and plays monster bass - at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Nightlight Lounge, 211 E. Chestnut St.

Her eighth solo release is "Devil's Halo."
