The Pickford Cinema is hitting up the film festival circuit and starting with a bang at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Pickford, which was one of 14 theaters invited to attend last year’s festival, was invited back to attend again this year. The independent film festival, which runs from Jan. 18-28 in Park City, Utah, was started by Robert Redford in 1981 and has put the spotlight on up-and-coming filmmakers.

“We were just excited and honored to be part of that original 14,” says Michael Falter, the Pickford’s program director.

While there, Falter hopes to scout out films that could resonate with Bellingham audiences.

After the excitement of Sundance, Falter will be a judge at the 2007 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival from Feb. 15-21 in Missoula, Mont. The festival is in its fourth year and will screen approximately 100 films.

“There’s just a bunch of documentaries this year that look great,” he says.
