Daniel James Brown shares his book, “The Boys in the Boat, ” about the University of Washington eight-oar crew team that stunned the world by winning the gold medal, beating the German team as Adolf Hitler looked on at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, in a free event at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Western Washington University’s Viking Union Multipurpose Room.
Brown shares the moving story of working-class boys who came from the state’s “foggy coastal villages, damp dairy farms, and smoky lumber towns” and mastered the art of rowing and work together and to become Olympic champions.
“The Boys in the Boat” is the Western Reads selection for 2014-15, Western’s campus-wide reading program designed to promote intellectual engagement and civil discourse among members of the campus community and it’s also the Whatcom Reads selection for 2015. Brown is scheduled to appear in Whatcom County again in February.
