OVERVIEW
The South Fork Valley is a winding stretch of river and two-lane road, pocket communities, forests and farms, and residents like it that way. Highway 9 south of Mount Baker Highway isn’t the fast route to anywhere, but it does offer views of the Cascades, access to trails, pleasant stops at Everybody’s Store and Acme General Store, and the way home, if you love peace and quiet in a rural setting.
Outdoor attractions abound, including bicycling, rafting, canoeing and kayaking, horseback trails on Stewart Mountain, walking trails on Blue and Bowman mountains, and hiking and view-gazing in Canyon Lake Community Forest.
HISTORY
Acme and Van Zandt live on as remnants of a group of towns that once clustered along the south fork of the Nooksack River. Prosperous towns that have since faded include Doran, Livewood, Saxon, Standard and Clipper.

QUOTE
“I really like the rural feel and the fact that it’s a farming community; there’s cows and horses. And the people out here are very unpretentious, independent and hard-working.”
Kimberly Roe, valley resident for 25 years
