OVERVIEW

Point Roberts covers nearly 5 square miles of the southern tip of a Canadian peninsula, a dangling reminder of the 19th century treaty that made the 49th Parallel the dividing line between Canada and the United States. That quirk turned Point Roberts into a de facto gated community, with border officials as the gatekeepers.

The point boomed during the early 1900s, with scores of fishing traps keeping canneries busy.

Today, the point still boasts a large marina, and stunning waterfront views that charm the estimated 1,300 permanent and 3,000 seasonal residents. The point faces the challenge of growing enough to support more services, while preserving its slow-paced atmosphere.

HISTORY

Capt. George Vancovuer came upon the point in 1792 and named the area after a friend, Capt. Henry Roberts.

QUOTE

“I like that it’s close to the water and has a great marina. It’s also close to a large metropolitan area, so if I want to take part in what the city has to offer it’s nearby. I like the rural aspect, to be so close to a built-up area but still have lots of trees and more of a country feel.”
Bill Skinner, Point Roberts resident for 15 years
