OVERVIEW

Nugent’s Corner sits where Mount Baker Highway meets the Nooksack River. There’s a small commercial cluster, including the last major grocery store on the way to Mount Baker.

A short distance up the road is Deming, home to the Nooksack Tribal Center and the tribe’s Nooksack River Casino, Deming Library, and Mount Baker junior and senior high schools.

With about 800 residents, it's a busy stretch buffered by forested hills and glimpses of mountains ahead. Attractions include fishing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting; Mount Baker Vineyards; Deming Homestead Eagle Park, a prime spot to watch eagles; and Deming Logging Show, home to a popular annual logging festival and other events.

HISTORY

Canoes guided and paddled by Nooksack Indians provided the only river transporation in the Deming area until the first steam ferry arrived about 1882. However, ferries ran only to Lynden. Beyond that, travelers had to walk or canoe upstream.
