Whatcom Falls

OVERVIEW

This lightly populated neighborhood is home to what is arguably the best park in Bellingham. Whatcom Falls Park occupies the northern third of the neighborhood, with trails, swimming, play areas and a state trout hatchery.

Most residents live on the south side of Lakeway Drive, opposite the park. Birch Street provides access to the many mountain-bike trails on Galbraith Mountain, while Bayview Cemetery covers more than 200 acres by the west boundary of the park.

A small commercial area on Electric Avenue offers a gas station, mini-mart and the popular Lafeen’s doughnut shop.

HISTORY

Bayview Cemetery began in 1887 when the town of Whatcom bought 10 acres on the road to Lake Whatcom. Prominent people buried there include pioneer settlers Henry and Elizabeth Roeder and Edward and Teresa Eldridge, poet Ella Higginson, and photographer historian Galen Biery.

Elementary students will attend Carl Cozier and Wade King in fall 2008.
