Emily Frankland scored three minutes into the contest to give the Western Washington women's soccer team its first win of the season, a 1-0 non-conference victory over Sonoma State on Monday, Sept. 7, at WCC's Orca Field.
The win was the Vikings' first in four tries to start the season.
Frankland hit the net with a low shot from 15-yards out. Molly Shannon flicked the ball to Frankland off a long goal kick from goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs.
The Vikings won despite losing the shots-on-goal battle, 15-10, for the first time all season. Arthurs had five saves, the last one coming in the 86th minute off a corner kick header from Sonoma State's Taylor Colacion.
Vikings, who reached the NCAA Division II Far West Regional final last season, improved to 1-2-1. Sonoma State fell to 2-2-0.
VIKINGS LEAD TWICE, BUT FALL ON LATE GOAL
Midfielder Kellan Brown scored a pair of goals, but it just wasn't enough. Chico State University scored its third goal of the game with three minutes left to take a 3-2 win over the Western Washington men's soccer team in a non-conference game on Monday, Sept. 7, at WCC's Orca Field.
Brown opened the scoring in the 15th minute after following his own penalty shot after it was deflected by the goalkeeper.
Chico State evened the score, but Brown restored the Vikings lead in the 57th minute, finishing off a Sean Conner cross that was headed on by forward Justin Moore. But Chico State equalized less than two minutes later.
The game-winner came on a rebound shot by Chico State's Luis Martinez with just under three minutes left.
The Vikings fell to 2-2-0 with the loss. Chico State improved to 3-1-0.
Brown has scored Western's last three goals and has been involved in the last four.
Chico State had a 17-13 edge in shots. Western goalkeeper Cameron Copps-Tilley made two saves in his first start of the season.
