Lynden's city hall project ahead of schedule

Each week, The Bellingham Herald takes a look at an ongoing construction project in Whatcom County. This week: Lynden's new City Hall.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Strengholt Construction is ahead of schedule on the 22,000-square-foot City Hall building. The building will have a basement and two floors of office and storage space. The framing is up and the building is enclosed, something builders wanted to do before the fall and winter storms came rolling in, Jim Strengholt said. They plan to have the exterior completed by the end of September.

Here are some project applications recently submitted to the city of Bellingham:
- A $250,000 commercial addition for the Meridian Dental Group at 3628 Meridian St., Suite 2D.
- At 1200 Old Fairhaven Parkway, Suite 301, plans have been submitted to build out three offices in an existing shell for a logo design business called Pivot Lab. Estimated costs are $17,000.
- Highgate Senior Living has plans for a $750,000 remodel of its facility at 155 E. Kellogg Road.
- Brooks Manufacturing has plans for a new $532,754 commercial building at 2121 Pacific St.

WHERE IS IT?

On the corner of Fourth and Liberty streets in Lynden.

WHO IS DOING THE WORK?

Strengholt is the general contractor. The architect is Zervas Group Architects.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The project bid award was for $4.6 million.

SCHEDULED COMPLETION DATE?

The scheduled completion date is the end of March, but Jim Strengholt expects the project to be completed at the end of February.

WHAT IS NOTEWORTHY ABOUT THE PROJECT?

Government projects can have a variety challenges, but Strengholt said this project is the smoothest he can remember in the company's history, allowing them to get ahead of schedule. Strengholt said the building requirements were not unusual, but there is an open foyer area that he believes people will enjoy. "This is one of those projects where I've had a very enjoyable experience," Strengholt said. "There's been a lot of excellent communication and it was well-designed, so our job has been made much easier."
