Each week, The Bellingham Herald takes a look at an ongoing commercial construction project in Whatcom County. This week: Marin.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

The resort-styled Marin condos are currently being constructed on Semiahmoo Spit and should begin to have residents moving in next month. There will be three 18-unit buildings with water views, located near the Semiahmoo Resort and the Blaine Marina, said Shana Mitcham, license assistant for Marin sales director Chet Kenoyer.

  • Here are some projects recently submitted to the city of Bellingham’s Building Services Department:
    * $318,000 in tenant improvements at 3101 Newmarket St., Suite 101, for new offices for RBC Wealth Management.
    * $25,000 in tenant improvements at Sunset Square, Suite 105, for a restaurant called Wrap & Roll.
    * $7 million for a 51-unit apartment complex at the former Walton Beverage facility at 1511 N. State St. The Bellingham Housing Authority is developing this project.

WHERE IS IT?

The condos are located on the 9500 block of Semiahmoo Parkway.

WHO IS DOING THE WORK?

Andrew Shaw and Robert Walker are developing the project, Exxel Pacific is the general contractor and Ankenman Marchand Architects designed it.

SCHEDULED COMPLETION DATE?

Building A is nearly finished, and should be ready to move into by September, said Mitcham. Building B and C should take approximately nine months respectively, and the entire project should be completed in about 18 months, she said.

WHAT IS NOTEWORTHY ABOUT THE PROJECT?

The units range in size from 1,200 square feet to more than 2,200 square feet and have water views on both sides, Mitcham said. Prices start at around $650,000 and go up to around $1.7 million. She also said that despite the current housing market, approximately 70 people a week come to Marin to look at model units. At this point, reservation deposits are being accepted.

"It's just one of those unique areas," she said. "Everyone's just interested in what's going on there."
