More commercial buildings planned in Barkley District

Here is a roundup of development proposals and decisions, and upcoming development-related meetings:

BELLINGHAM

Talbot Real Estate LLC has applied to the state Department of Ecology for storm-water permits for construction of new commercial buildings in the Barkley District. The first proposed project, Barkley Medical Quadrant, will be north of Barkley Boulevard and west of Howe Place. The second project, called South West Quadrant, will besouth of Barkley Boulevard on both sides of Woburn Street. Comments can be sent to the DOE, Water Quality Program, P.O. BLAINE

The city of Blaine received an application from Bob Gudmundson of Westman Marine Inc. to build a 50-foottall, 4,800-square-foot portable building for the construction and repair of ships at the Port of Bellingham’s Blaine Harbor. The project is at 218 McMillan Ave. The applicants need a shoreline substantial development permit. Written comments must be sent to Michael Jones, permit manager, city of Blaine, 344 H St., Blaine WA 98230, by 5 p.m. July 14. The final decision will be made by the Blaine City Council. FERNDALE

The Ferndale City Council will hold a public meeting Monday to discuss development of new retail standards, an interim ordinance to ensure that transportation facilities aren’t pushed to a certain congestion level with new development and the temporary moratorium that’s been in place on large retail. The new rules would apply to developments citywide. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in City Hall Annex, 5694 Second Ave. Details: 384-4006 or www.cityofferndale.org.

LYNDEN

WHATCOM COUNTY

Whatcom County has decided that its project to replace an existing 37-foot-by-24-foot bridge and creosote pilings with a new 40-foot-by-28-foot bridge won’t likely have a significant negative impact on the environment. The project also involves placement of a temporary bridge north of the proposed permanent bridge. The project is on the 3900 block of South Bay Drive, crossing Brannian Creek at the south end of Lake Whatcom. The county also decided that its project to replace a bridge in the 4100 block of South Bay Drive won’t likely have a significant negative impact on the environment. That second project involves replacing a 20-foot-by-24-foot bridge crossing Fir Creek with a new 40-foot-by-28-foot concrete bridge on steel pilings. That project also involves the placement of a 4-foot-by-40-foot culvert and temporary bypass road north of the bridge.
