A proposed workplace rule about heat-related illnesses will be considered a 1 p.m. public hearing today at the Quality Inn Baron Suites, 100 E. Kellogg Road.

The Washington state Department of Labor and Industries proposal is intended to protect workers from heat-related illness while working outdoors in hot weather. It would require employers to:

Update their safety programs to include preventive measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Train employees to recognize the signs and risk factors of heatrelated illnesses.

Check the weather forecast and temperatures daily to know when preventive measures are needed.

On hot days, increase the volume of water provided to employees and respond to any symptoms of illness.

L&I will hold five public hearings, with tentative adoption of the rule set for June 4. L&I worked with business and labor representatives to develop the proposal. Complete information is online at www.lni.wa.gov/safety . Details: (360) 902-4568.
