Washington state’s minimum wage will increase 14 cents to $8.07 an hour beginning in January.
The Department of Labor and Industries recalculates the state’s minimum wage each year in September as required by Initiative 688, approved by voters in 1998. The law requires that the state minimum wage be adjusted each year according to the change in a federal consumer price index.
This adjustment is smaller than the one that took effect Jan. 1 of this year, when the minimum wage increased by 30 cents from 2006.
Washington’s minimum wage applies to workers in both agricultural and nonagricultural jobs, although 14- and 15-year-olds may be paid 85 percent of the adult minimum wage.
Since 1999, the state’s minimum wage has risen more than $2 an hour.
