closeShawn Julia Smith and Matthew Buettner announce their plans for an August 1 wedding in Seattle. Shawn is the daughter of Laurie and Jeff Smith of Ferndale. Shawn graduated from Ferndale High School, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Emory University. Shawn has been teaching science for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and will pursue a Master of Science in Education. Matt is the son of Lynn and Gary Buettner of Bettendorf, Iowa. Matt graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He is finishing his Master's in Forensic Science at Florida International University in Miami, and will later pursue a degree in law. The couple met as graduate students at FIU.
