BELLINGHAM - National education reform advocate and author Alfie Kohn will explain why education shouldn't be only about memorization during a talk Friday, Oct. 9.

Kohn, who has written 11 books on education, parenting and human behavior, believes the traditional method of teaching facts and then testing students doesn't help students as much as teaching them about the big ideas and letting them have an active role in what they learn.

Kohn was invited by local private schools Whatcom Day and Exploration academies in conjunction with the Educational Institute for Democratic Renewal at Western Washington University's Woodring College of Education.

The talk starts at 7 p.m. at Whatcom Community College's Syre Auditorium, 237 W. Kellogg Road. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. For tickets or more information, contact Whatcom Day Academy at 312-1103 or Explorations Academy at 671-8085. Tickets also are available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.
