A local author and teacher has launched a line of olive oil products.

Mary Ellen Carter's new olive oil line from Verde Specialty Foods means green in more ways than one.

"It's fresh, fragrant and fruity - and it hasn't spent months in a tanker from Europe," Carter said in a press release. The olives were picked and pressed within 12 hours in a Northern California olive grove, then shipped to Carter's culinary kitchen for local bottling. The bottles are labeled with the freshness date, and has the California Olive Oil Council's "Seal of Quality," Carter said.

Carter was a food columnist for The Bellingham Herald for the past 10 years and has authored four cookbooks, including the local bestseller "At Joe's Garden, Harvest Recipes from the Northwest," as well as "Accent on Asia - Recipes for a Culinary Adventure." She also teaches cooking classes through Whatcom Community College.

Verde Specialty Foods' olive oils can be found at Old World Deli, Joe's Garden, and Greenhouse in Bellingham. For more information about Verde Specialty Food products, visit cookwithmaryellen.com or call (360) 820-8448.
