Two Whatcom County companies made a list of the largest private companies in Washington state.
Haggen Inc. and Exxel Pacific Inc. were on Puget Sound Business Journal's annual list of the state's largest private firms. The rankings are based on gross revenue in 2008. The rankings are based on research, but only companies that responded to requests for information were listed.
Haggen ranked eighth in the state with $844 million in gross revenue, down from sixth the previous year. The company has 4,000 employees and operates 33 stores in Washington and Oregon.
Exxel Pacific ranked 76th, moving up three spots from the 2008 list. The construction company had $106 million in gross revenue last year and employs 95 people, according to the list.
Topping the list of statewide private companies is Seattle-based Darigold Inc, which generated $2.2 billion in 2008. That's followed by Symetra Financial, REI and PetroCard Systems Inc.
