Whatcom County property sales remain sluggish

Total property sales in Whatcom County communities continue to significantly lag behind the previous year, according to a new report.

Through May 573 properties sold in Bellingham, down 36 percent compared to the same period in 2008, according to data compiled by First American Title in Bellingham. Properties include homes, commercial and industrial property as well as undeveloped land.

Ferndale, Lynden and Blaine had 519 property sales, down 30 percent compared to the first five months of 2008.

Condominium sales have been particularly hard hit. In Bellingham there were 93 condo sales, down 50 percent compared to the first five months of 2008. For Ferndale, Lynden and Blaine, condo sales were down 54 percent.

For the month of May, total property sales were down 28 percent in Bellingham and down 22 percent in Ferndale, Lynden and Blaine.
