The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association is receiving support from Haggen Food & Pharmacy stores and Lummi Island Wild Co-op under a recently announced agreement.
Haggen stores and Lummi Island Wild Co-op, providers of reef net wild salmon, are donating $3,400 to NSEA, a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring sustainable wild salmon runs in Whatcom County. The donation represents a portion of customer purchases of Lummi Island Wild salmon at Haggen stores.
Haggen employees will adopt a local stream and volunteer for NSEA work parties that will improve salmon habitat. Haggen also will provide informational material at its Whatcom County stores that increases public awareness about the NSEA and its efforts to improve wild salmon runs.
Bellingham-based Haggen, Inc. offers Lummi Island Wild salmon throughout its 33 supermarkets in Washington and Oregon, including four Haggen stores in Bellingham and one in Ferndale.
The Lummi Island Wild Co-op is comprised of reef net owners who provide sustainable wild seafood with a fleet that includes the first solar-powered fishing vessel in the world. It received the 2007 Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Practices.
