Each week The Bellingham Herald takes a closer look at a business or construction project. This week: Slo Pitch Pub & Casino

What it is: Slo Pitch Pub & Casino is a sports bar and small casino that offers a variety of games including pool, pull tabs, black jack, poker and Texas Hold'em poker.

Ownership: Jas Gill and his wife, Saroj Gill, have owned Slo Pitch for 12 years.

Employees: 80

What's new: Slo Pitch is moving from its old location at East Sunset Drive to a newly renovated building on Guide Meridian. Slo Pitch will now be located between two hotels in the building once occupied by Eleni's Family Restaurant across from the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

The new location will enable the business to display casino signs to attract a larger clientele, owner Jas Gill said. He said they gutted the original building and added 800 square feet, giving the restaurant and casino 5,000 square feet of space.

"The new location is going to be more East Coast style," Gill said, adding that it will feature dark woods and granite counter tops to go along with nine card tables. The business will have 16 high-definition LCD flat screen televisions. "You won't go anywhere without seeing a TV," he said.

Sunday, Nov. 22, was the last day Slo Pitch would be it open at its old location. The new location will open Friday, Nov. 27.

What makes it different: Slo Pitch, which is open 24 hours, is the only private casino in Bellingham, according to Gill. The entire establishment is non-smoking. The restaurant, which features breakfast all day and night, is open to people of all ages. The restaurant menu is almost all American food with exception to a couple East Indian dishes made by Saroj Gill. The casino is separate from the restaurant and is open to people 18 and older; it doesn't have "a huge casino feel," Jas Gill said. The restaurant and casino have more of a "Cheers" atmosphere, and there are a lot of regular customers, he said.
