Traffic at the Bellingham International Airport in September didn't match the record-breaking month of August, but it is up significantly compared to the same period last year.
Last month 26,785 people flew out of the Bellingham airport, down 15.8 percent compared to August, when 31,794 passengers left the airport, according to data from the Port of Bellingham. Last month's total was 27.3 percent higher than last September, when 21,049 people took trips from the airport. A look at previous years shows a drop-off traffic usually begins in September with the end of summer vacations.
The August total was the highest monthly total ever at the Bellingham airport, and only the second time the airport had more than 30,000 passengers.
For the first nine months of the year, the total passenger count at Bellingham is 237,702, up 16.8 percent compared to the same period in 2008. Broken down by airline, Allegiant continues to garner the most passengers in 2009, with 163,027 in the first nine months of the year. That's followed by Horizon (68,584) and Alaska (6,091), which began offering flights to Las Vegas this summer.
