Each week The Bellingham Herald takes a closer look at a business or construction project. This week: Good Earth Pottery
What it is: Good Earth Pottery is a consignment for local clay artists, owner Deb Martin said. The business features a number of handmade functional and decorative pieces including mugs, bowls and tiles.
Ownership: Cheryl Lee, Linda Stone and Deb Martin
Employees: The business has three part-time employees.
What's new: Good Earth Pottery is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The business began in 1969 as a community cooperative studio and small gallery space, Martin said. Since its transition to a full-time gallery, Good Earth Pottery has gained strong local support and an influx of tourists during the summer months. "There was a big push for buying local, and since then we've been seeing more people wanting to support local artists," Martin said. The business plans to formally celebrate its anniversary next year with a month-long celebration in February.
What makes it different: The business features a different artist each month. For November, Good Earth Pottery will feature the work of one of its owners, Cheryl Lee. Lee creates clay vessels based on the Northwest's native plants and animals, according to Good Earth Pottery's Web site. Her work includes lidded containers, vases, bowls and rattles.
For the last two years in March, the business has featured pieces created by local high school students in ceramics classes, Martin said. Good Earth Pottery also participates in gallery walks and other local events.
