Each week The Bellingham Herald takes a closer look at a business or construction project. This week: Advanced Towing of Washington.

What it is: Advanced Towing of Washington provides a number of roadside services including spare tire rotations, fuel delivery, helping people who are locked out of their cars and recovering vehicles that have gone off the road.

Ownership: Mikel Zwicker, 27, is the owner and operator. Originally from Deming, Zwicker graduated from Mount Baker High School in 2001. He now lives in Laurel.

How it started: Zwicker started the towing company earlier this month. After being laid off from an automotive repair company in November, Zwicker decided to start his own business. In early June, he saw a tow truck for sale from A-1 Transmissions Service Inc. "When I saw that truck for sale, I thought there's big potential with that thing," he said.

Motivation: Zwicker said he decided to start his own towing company because he enjoys this type of work. "It's fun to do," he said. "I like helping people in need and giving good prices for my services."
