Each week The Bellingham Herald takes a closer look at a business or construction project. This week: Command Aviation.
What it is: The company is a one-stop shop for owners of private and corporate aircraft, providing a number of services for small plane owners. Command Aviation specializes in management, maintenance and repair services and also has a pilot referral program, a 24-hour emergency service number and a courtesy car for clients to use while their aircraft is being worked on.
Ownership: The company is owned and operated by Craig Scamehorn, Scott Hume and Jeff Kvamme.
How it started: Scamehorn was working at ViaJet Aircraft Management in Skagit County and was preparing to leave for a new job in Oregon. Hume, who was a customer of Scamehorn's, wanted him to stay and suggested they start their own shop. They came up to Whatcom County to search for hangar space where they met Kvamme. The three of them formed Command Aviation in February.
What makes it different: The difference between Command Aviation and other similar companies is "the level of professional service," Scamehorn said. Scamehorn has extensive experience in the aircraft industry, including former positions as the director of maintenance at ViaJet in Skagit County and lead mechanic at Crossing Aviation at the Tacoma Narrows Airport. He, Hume and Kvamme are all licensed pilots. Scamehorn said they also pride themselves on the cleanliness of their shop.
What's next: Scamehorn said he hopes to expand the company beyond the confines of the hangar. "We're working on getting a flight school so we can teach people to fly," he said.
