WCL BASEBALL: Poggemeyer dominates for Bells

BELLINGHAM - Craig Hertler broke up a scoreless ball game in the seventh with an RBI single and Bells starter Tyrell Poggemeyer went the distance, keeping Kitsap off the board to give Bellingham its fourth straight West Coast League victory 2-0 on Friday, July 3.

The second largest crowd in Joe Martin Field history-1,747-waited in anticipation for the post-game fireworks show late into the game, but the Bells snuck in a display of their own in the eighth inning.

Hertler's two-out single gave Bellingham the lead, but an inning later catcher Kevin Whitehead belted his second home run of the season to put the Bells up 2-0.

Poggemeyer allowed just six hits in his nine-inning shutout to pick up his second win. He did walk four batters and hit two others, but he also added two strikeouts.

"That's what we expect Tyrell to do for us every time we put the ball in his hand," said Bells head coach Brandon Newell. "He continues to command his pitches and keep hitters off balance.

"We've had a different guy step up each night and everybody's willing to do whatever it takes to get us the win."

The Bells take a four-game win streak to Kitsap beginning Saturday, July 4. Bellingham played eight games on the road before returning to Joe Martin Field on July 14.
