GOLF NOTEBOOK: Rawitzer finishes ninth at WSGA Amateur

Former Squalicum High School standout Matt Rawitzer, who won the Class 2A state championship this spring after winning the 3A title as a junior, finished only 6 strokes off the lead at the 83rd Annual Washington State Golf Associations Men's Amateur Championship.

Rawitzer, who will play at New Mexico State University next year, shot a four-day total of 290 to place ninth at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman last week. He finished with a final round 74 after shooting third-round 70 on Thursday, June 25.

Washington State University golfer Austin Hurt of Bainbridge Island won the title with a 284, beating a second-place tie between College Place's Drew Reinland and Kenmore's Derek Berg by 1 stroke. Hurt shot a final-round 65 on Friday, June 26, to grab the victory.

Bellingham's Matt Cowell shot a four-day total of 300, with all four rounds were in the mid 70s.

WOMEN'S AMATEUR

Bellingham's Catherin Allen shot a three-day total of 245 to finish in a three-way tie for ninth place in the WSGA's Women's Amateur Championship.

Pamela Burneski, an 18-year-old from Surrey, B.C., who is a member at Homestead Golf Resort in Lynden, shot a final-round 79 on Thursday to win the title by 3 strokes over Bellevue's Cathy Kim. Burneski made bogey on her first five holes of the final round, but settled down with three pars and a birdie to finish out the front nine.

Former Bellingham High standout Claire Rachor, who won the past two 2A state titles, finished 17th with a three-day total of 253, while former Sehome standout Karly Olsen finished tied for 20th with a 256.

Lacey's Yasue Alkins won the Senior Women's Amateur title with a three-day total of 229.

PADDEN JUNE OPEN

Matt Cowell fired a 2-under-par 70 to take first place gross during the June Open at Lake Padden on Saturday, June 20. Fuzzy Fuchs was second in the first division, and Chris Barker placed third. On the net side, Pete Papadopulos was first, Travis Barker was second and Ron Fuller took third.

In Division II, Craig Johnson took first in the gross, Greg Bring was second with Steve Dorsett and Dean Carpenter tied for third. Second division net was won by Quentin Thompson, Bob Johnson was second with Steve Frick, Lonnie Oneal and Steve Wight tied for third.

Neil Goit won first place gross in the third division, while Doug Nemo was second and Larry Marshall, Rich Womack and Greg Banfield finished in a third-place tie. Division III net went to Ron Johnson, Don Hanesworth tied for second with Aaron Coghlan, Tim Frick and Don Oehler in a tie for third.

Doug Lake placed first in the fourth division gross, with Rob McCombie in second and Rich Cranfill took third. Fourth division net went to Kevin Brown, Don Chapman was second and Randy Tobkin placed third.

There were 89 players vying for this year's June Open title. The next event is the Two-Man Best-Ball Championship on July 11.

HOLES IN ONE

? Jack Barton hit a hole-in-one on Wednesday, June 24, on the 12th hole at Lake Padden Golf Course. He used a 9-iron for the 140-yard shot that was witnessed by Jim Hedrick. It was his sixth hole-in-one in 30 years of playing golf.

? Chuck Day hit his first hole-in-one on Wednesday, June 24, on the third hole at Raspberry Ridge Golf Course. He used a 6-iron on the 135-yard shot that was witnessed by Bruce Day, John Leishman and Dick Farmer.
