SEATTLE --- Point guard Morris Anderson had 20 points, nine assists, six steals, four rebounds and three blocked shots as Western Washington University defeated Dominican University (Calif.) 87-72 in final-day men's basketball action Saturday at the Seattle Pacific University Tip-Off Classic at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
It was career victory No. 450 for Western coach Brad Jackson, who is in his 25th season directing the Vikings. Western improved to 5-1 with its fourth consecutive win.
Anderson was one of five double-figure scorers for Western. Forward Zach Bruce had a double-double with 18 points, 16 in the first half, and a game-high 11 rebounds. Forward Derrick Webb added 16 points, and guard Harold McAllister and forward Rory Blanche came off the bench to score 10 each.
Western opened the game with a 19-4 run over the first 5:24 as Bruce scored eight points and Anderson hit two 3-pointers, and the Vikings led 44-34 at halftime.
Dominican outscored Western, 16-8, in the first 6:27 of the second half to trail by just two, 52-50, and the Penguins were within one, 66-65 with 5:36 remaining. But the Vikings scored 22 of the last 28 points, McAllister and Webb each scoring seven, to close out the contest.
Anderson hit 6 of 12 from the field, 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and made all four of his free throws. Bruce was 8 of 12 from the floor, Blanche 4 of 7 and McAllister did not miss a shoot, hitting two 3-pointers and converting four free throws.
The Vikings were 21 of 28 (75 percent) at the line and had a 38-28 rebound advantage.
Western next competes in its own 11th Chuck Randall Thanksgiving Classic, entertaining Academy of Art CA on Friday, Nov. 27, and Grand Canyon on Saturday, Nov. 28.
Dominican, 0-3, was led by the game-high 28 points of freshman guard Austin Bryan.
