Squalicum's Rylie Martin and relay teams, as well as several more local swimmers, had strong showings at the Class 2A Northwest District Meet preliminaries on Friday, Nov. 6, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.

The district finals take place at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, with the top two swimmers in each event, or those who meet state-qualifying standards, moving on to the state meet in Federal Way.

For swimmers from Squalicum, Sehome, Bellingham and Lynden, Friday's preliminary results are a good indication for a strong showing for the finals.

"There should be some very exciting races all the way through," Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. "Squalicum is certainly in the driver's seat."

The Storm's relay teams had the top preliminary times in two of the three relays. The Storm team of Carlee Bock, Camorah King, Martin and Leah Strickling were first in the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, .19 seconds. In the 400 freestyle relay, the Storm team of Martin, Marissa Abbott, King and Bock took first in 3:56.40.

Martin had the top local individual showing in prelims with two-first place finishes. Martin had the top time in the 200 freestyle (2:06.82) and 500 freestyle (5:38.76.

Sehome has a slew of swimmers reaching the finals, including four in the 200 freestyle (Megan McGuire, second fastest time), Julie Maurer (third), Anastasia Miksovsky (fourth) and Emily Blatter (seventh).

"This is going to be our strongest event," Helling said. "I was really pleased with how the girls did there."

Ali Fisher, who won a state title in the 100 freestyle last year, will battle Anacortes' Katie Kaestner for the event title on Saturday. Kaestner had the top prelim time at 54.23 while Fisher was close behind at 54.56. Both times are better than Fisher's state-winning time in last year's state meet.

Sehome had the top two swims in the 50 freestyle with Fisher the fastest (25.23) and Michelle Lam not far behind (25.72). Lam heads to the 100 backstroke final with the fastest prelim time of 1:03.76.

Also starting well was McGuire who had the second-fastest prelim time in two events (200 and 500 freestyle) and Miksovsky who also will be in the final in both freestyle events.

Bellingham advanced all three of its relays to the finals as all three finished in the top six. Red Raiders swimmers who will be in individual finals are Jenny Rodgers (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Lindsay Siegfried (100 butterfly), Katherine Rodgers (100 butterfly and Alyssa Luttrell (100 butterfly).

"We had a pretty good meet," Bellingham coach Dana Beatty said in a phone interview. "We have a lot of people coming back to swim. We had a lot of best times."

Highlighting Lynden's day was a state-qualifying mark in the 200 medley relay. The team of Hannah Hollander, Megan Niemela, Jasmynne Umbaugh and Michelle Bruncks finished in 2:04.45 (fourth in prelims).
