The Lummi volleyball team put a scare into top-ranked Neah Bay on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the opening round of the Class 1B Tri-District Tournament at Crescent High School but couldn't finish off the Red Devils and eventually lost 16-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 15-11.

The Blackhawks won two of the first three games, before a serve-receive adjustment by Neah Bay in the fourth game led to a 10-0 run by the Red Devils and helped even the match. Neah Bay then went on to take the fifth set and match.

Lummi must now win two matches on Saturday, Nov. 7, to advance to the state tournament. The Blackhawks open with Eastside Prep at 10 a.m. at Coupeville in a loser-out contest.

"Everybody played really well," Lummi coach Dan Williams said in a phone interview. "It was a really solid performance. We just came up a little short against the best team in the state. Overall I think we're pretty happy with it. We're looking forward to this weekend."

Lummi's Kyla Frajman had 15 kills and 16 blocks to lead the Blackhawks. Rosie Jefferson added 12 kills and Reyna Jones had 12 digs. Lakiesha Point and Gillian Roberts were both perfect serving.

"I just can't say enough about how well we played," Williams said. "We almost had them."
